How to Protect Your Business From Data Leakage - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Protect Your Business From Data Leakage - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Data leaks happen, and sometimes, no matter what you do, they are inevitable. That said, you should always do what you can to protect and secure your interests and, more importantly, your sensitive and personal information. When it comes to managing a business, you have the sensitive data of your customers, clients and employees to worry about as well. Since data leaks can come from a number of different sources, it can be difficult trying to plug up all the holes. Leaks can happen due to network or database intrusions, employee security breaches or negligence, unsecured web and email browsing and more. That’s exactly why you should be doing everything in your power to prevent information loss. There are so many vulnerabilities that if you don’t stay on top of them, you’re just going to fall by the wayside. To offer some guidance, we compiled a list of tips that can help prevent data leakage. Take Initial Preventative Measures Good security is as much about preparation before an attack as it is about how you react after one. To better understand how you can prevent data leakage, you must first identify where it’s coming from and what that data is. For example, sensitive information and data can be contained in databases, emails, devices such as smartphones or PCs, web portals and much more. In addition, because there are many types of data, you might be better off treating each differently. Social security numbers or credit card information are much more dangerous in the wrong hands than, say, an email address. You don’t want to treat all data the same, as you may need a separate set of controls or security measures for really important stuff. You can implement tools that will help scan where your data resides on a company network, such as the kind offered by Tablus, Reconnex and Websense. Sit down and plan out beforehand what kind of preventative measures you’re going to take to secure your data and network. Will you use data encryption? What kind of security systems are you going to install for internal networks and hardware? Which users will have access to the highest levels of sensitive data and who will be monitoring them? This is also a good time to mention that you should always do a background check and personality profile on employees before giving them access to sensitive information. It is just as possible to have an internal breach as an external one. Don’t Forget to Secure Back-End Connections When security is discussed or implemented, it often pertains to front-end applications or software, the general network and select devices, but those are all relatively obvious. One area that’s often overlooked is related to back-end connections or administrative panels. Through the use of a Virtual Identity Server or VIS, the same amount of security can be applied to back-end connections for any software application or network setup. It works similar to a firewall, with the exception that it filters and restricts data access as necessary. In other words, platforms and devices are given exactly the right permissions needed to operate â€" no more and no less. This helps prevent data leakage by limiting the amount of information being passed around on the back-end of a system. Always Use Encryption While encryption isn’t totally uncrackable, you’ll be a great deal safer with it than without. Sadly, a lot of companies and management teams feel that encryption is intrusive, thanks to slow-activating processes and complicated implementation methods. That doesn’t change the fact that you should be using it to protect any sensitive data or information you have stored, no matter how big your business is. “Even if you’re a small business, you’re still subject to the Data Protection Act,” says Sian John, a security expert working at  Symantec. “The law requires that you protect personal data from being stolen, misused or shared. If you have customer details stored on your computer, then using encryption allows you to say: ‘I’ve taken precautions to ensure that personal data doesn’t get lost.’” Encryption can cause problems with gateway security products, but a way around that would be to employ encrypted transmission protocols for your network like SSH or SCP. It’s always a safe bet to ensure that stored or transmitted data is securely locked behind an encryption key. Monitor Network Access and Regular Activity Once you have a digital security plan in place, that’s not the end of it. You need to have a properly trained security and IT team to monitor network access and keep an eye on regular employee activity. This not only ensures that employees are on the up-and-up, but it also helps you protect against leaks better because while monitoring a network, you can identify compromised channels and take action much faster. A recent study revealed that 44% of employees share work-related devices with others without supervision, and 46% of employees admit they transfer files between work and personal computers when they are working out of the office. To drive that point home even more, 18 percent of employees share their private passwords with co-workers, allowing them access to their devices or accounts. All three of these scenarios could lead to compromised data in many forms. It’s a good idea to monitor what’s going on with your network and what your employees are doing with their devices, especially if they are transferring files or sharing passwords. That includes allowing your security team the right amount of leverage and controls to deny access to users, both foreign and domestic, in the event of a problem. In a situation like those described above, your security team either needs to take action by revoking access from the infringing user(s), or said users need to be educated further on how their actions could compromise the company. It is possible for a third party to take advantage of an employee’s negligence in order to gain access to sensitive data without their consent. Your employees should be made aware of this fact, and they should be trained to help prevent it. There are tools â€" from vendors such as Vericept, Oakley Networks, Vontu and more â€" that can monitor outgoing traffic on a network and flag suspicious activity. They can inspect channels like email, web browsing, FTP applications and even peer-to-peer file-sharing software for infringing data. When someone is identified, the tools will notify the appropriate authorities so they may take action. If your business operates a large-scale network or you have a great deal of employees, it might be easier to go with an automated monitoring system such as this. Either way, you need to pay close attention to what’s happening on your network and how data is being used by those who have access to it. Without doing this, you’re leaving yourself open to attack.

How to Start a Job Search 7 Steps - Career Sidekick

How to Start a Job Search 7 Steps - Career Sidekick How to Start a Job Search: 7 Steps Applying for Jobs / https://www.edenscott.com/blog Its tempting to start applying for jobs immediately when you decide you want to start a job search. However, there are a few key steps you should do BEFORE applying for any jobs and these steps will actually help you get hired in less time.So Im going to reveal what Id do if I were starting a job search today before sending out any resumes or applications. This is how to start a job search to set yourself up for successHow to Start a Job Search: 7 Steps Before You Start Applying1. Review your past success and accomplishmentsIf you just left a job or will be leaving one soon, the first thing you should do to get ready to start a job search is to think about what you accomplished. Its easy to lose track of these things as your career goes on, but theyre one of the best ways to make your resume stand out. You can put accomplishments in your resume intro/summary paragraph, your bullets, and more.So what did you actually achieve in your last job? This is diffe rent than what you were assigned to do, or responsible for, and is actually more important!Employers will be much more impressed by this type of data on your resume, rather than phrases like, responsible for2. Update your resumeAfter youve thought about some of your recent accomplishments in your last job or current job, its time to update your resume to attract employers.Put your most recent work, and make sure to includenumbers, facts and statistics whenever possible. If you want more help with writing an impressive resume Id recommend reading this full list of what should go on a resume. And for samples of good employment history sections that will get you interviews, read this article.Putting data on your resume is one of the best ways to stand out, so make sure youre adding as many pieces of data as you can dollar figures, percent increases, etc. other stats is a lot more impressive than saying top performer, etc.3. Update your LinkedInAfter youve got a resume youre happy with, you want to put some of that key information on your LinkedIn for your job search too. Most hiring managers are checking your LinkedIn even if you applied elsewhere, so its important to make sure this represents you as a professional and shows off some of your recent work.Put bullets and accomplishments from your resume into LinkedIn. Make sure you have a great photo, too. If you dont have a photo on LinkedIn, many recruiters and hiring managers will be suspicious that youre not a real person (fake accounts are somewhat common on all social networks, and LinkedIn is no different).Updating your LinkedIn is a key step for how to start a job search, so dont skip this.If youre not convinced, read this article on the 5 reasons you should use LinkedIn.And if you want more help setting up your LinkedIn, heres a list of everything to put on a LinkedIn profile.4. Brainstorm what type of companies you want to work forWhat type of job do you want? Do you want to stay in the same industry or not ? Employers arent going to interview you and hire you if you cant show them that youve thought about this.Skipping this step is one of the top reasons I see job seekers fail their interviews, or not even get interviews (because they cant explain this in cover letters, either).Employers dont want to hire someone whos desperate and will take any job they get. They want someone whos targeting specific things.Do not skip this step when planning to start your job search. Its absolutely crucial.Once youve thought about the general type of job you want (industry, function/role, etc.), you can start researching specific companies.I like to search on Google and LinkedIn.LinkedIn has a great feature where you view one companys profile, and it suggests six other similar companies that people also viewed (see the image below). You can view those six, and discover six more from each of those companies. Just keep branching out!On Google, try searching for things like List of pharmaceutical compani es in Boston or pharma companies in Boston, etc.5. Make a list of companies you want to apply toAs you find companies youd be interested in working for, put it all in an Excel spreadsheet or Google Sheet. Now you wont have to come back and find these companies again when youre ready to apply and take interviews. The minute youre ready, you can go to your list and start applying. Now, you may be thinking, Hold on, how do I know these companies are even hiring? It doesnt matter. Most successful companies are always growing, and sending them a great email with your resume and why youd love to work for them may get you the interview even if they havent posted a relevant job!!Sure, you can also search later for companies that have jobs posted online, but everyone does that so thats where its ultra-competitive.You can still do it, but do this as well. This is a key part of preparing to start a job search. Also now that you know what types of jobs you want to apply for, consider tailoringyour resume based on the specific roles you want.Sending out a generic resume to every employer is faster but its going to limit how many companiesrespond. Ive tried it both ways and have seen 4-times as many responses after tailoring my resume.6. Start networkingBefore you start applying for jobs and contacting these companies youve found in the steps above, think about who you know already.Do you have any friends/past coworkers that can help you get in touch with a couple of employers in your industry? When youre referred to a company by someone they know and trust, the entire process is MUCH easier. Youll get interviewed faster and often have a more relaxed, easier job interview, too (theyll ask easier questions and trust you more from the start).I wrote an article on why networking is the fastest way to find a job so if you want more info on this, go here. The bottom line is: You should always think if you know anyone you can contact directly to get introduced to a company before you a pply cold. This is a key step when youre ready to begin your search. The people who only apply online and dont do any networking often spend months longer in their job search. So your network is one of the first places you should look when starting a job search.7. Plan ahead for referencesReferences usually arent needed until the end of the job interview process. But if you want to speed through your job search, you might want to think about two or three people who you can use as references and ask if you have their permission. That way, when a company asks, youll be excited and ready to provide your references not nervous! While this final step isnt 100% necessary when starting a job search, its another way you can make the upcoming job hunt process easier for yourself.By the following the steps above, youll give yourself the best chance of success in your new job search. Its great to start applying for jobs as soon as you can, but preparing and doing a big of prep-work to start your j ob search is important as well.

Examples of Writing Advise in a Resume

Examples of Writing Advise in a ResumeIt is very important to take examples of writing accomplishments in a resume. This should include the kind of letter, or other writing that would speak for you, and not vice versa. There are many inefficiencies and mistakes that would be greatly avoided if one takes the time to learn about what writing accomplishments in a resume is all about. One of the most popular examples of writing accomplishments in a resume is the use of subliminal messaging. It may not be consciously thought about, but it is a big part of the grammar in resumes. Subliminal messages can be fairly simple or very complex. However, they all have the same goal, which is to create a negative impression on the reader, and usually subconsciously. The most successful subliminal message will likely be the one that includes information that is already on your resume. Many professionals write examples of writing accomplishments in a resume with wording such as, 'Completing an agreement for the last three years in a competitive job environment...' This is all well and good, except that someone may actually believe that you worked for such a company. This can certainly play into the negative impressions that you want to create. You could be speaking a common language to someone, and they will believe that you really did work for that company.Examples of writing accomplishments in a resume can be based off of a bit more high-concept concepts. A writer may use the example of a man that has been the head chef of a major hotel for more than 30 years. If you were to state in a resume that you had worked for the same hotel for the past three years, you will likely get a humorous response. However, if you state that you had worked in the same position for the past thirty years, the simple fact that you have been with the same company for that long should be considered. The common sense of the reader should win out, and you should receive a much more positive response. Writ ing examples of writing accomplishments in a resume that does not reflect the true state of your experience is not going to attract any clients to you.Examples of writing accomplishments in a resume that includes quotes are another way to get yourself noticed. There are many sources available online for a variety of quotes. The only caveat with this type of example of writing accomplishments in a resume is that a quote may not necessarily be from you, but rather a fictitious employee that you created. The only simple fact about the quote is that it does not have to be from you. Instead, the fake quote is a reminder of you to your reader. You can use this example of writing accomplishments in a resume in a lot of different ways. The key is to make sure that you avoid using a name or identifying information that is also on your resume.Examples of writing accomplishments in a resume can come from a variety of sources. Remember that the most successful examples of writing accomplishments in a resume are the ones that contain information that you have never told anyone else. Having your new skills and accomplishments spoken for you can be quite a boost to the professional image that you wish to present.

5 Things Employees Need To Understand About Personal Injury Claims CareerMetis.com

5 Things Employees Need To Understand About Personal Injury Claims â€" CareerMetis.com Most businesses out there are prone to personal injury claims. According to the law, a personal injury law enables a person with an injury to go to a local civil court and claim legal damages and remedies for all the losses that came from the accident. The very core of a personal injury system is for a victim to be “made whole” or compensated after they have suffered harm, one way or another due to intentional conduct or carelessness.evalWhile it’s not unavoidable for employees to get injured in the premises of their office, it’s every business owner’s responsibility to ensure that everything is working out smoothly, and limit the risk of acquiring a lawsuit.Business owners’ responsibilities for others are quite vast ? from visitors, employees, to next-door neighbors. They’re responsible for providing a safe working environment for everyone. Therefore, here are the essential things every business owner need to understand when it comes to personal injury claims:1) Neglige nce Can Result to LawsuitsevalBad things and accidents can happen in the workplace, leading victims to seek medical treatment. How can negligence from these accidents result in a lawsuit? More importantly, on what grounds will a company be legally responsible for an accident? There are four elements of negligence that leads to lawsuits:a legal duty of acting sensibly and deliberatelythe breach of duty or failure to act wisely and reasonablythe causal connection between the accident and the conductthe damages and loss the stemmed directly from the accidentAn individual or business is negligent if they fail to exercise care to avoid harm and injury to other individuals and their property. In other words, they were unable to do what a reasonable person would do given in a similar circumstance.2) Employees Can Be Responsible For Their AccidentsIf an accident happens in a business, owners should also investigate the situation as objectively as possible, especially if they have a suspicion of the other party of being at fault. Employers need to become unbiased to be able to identify certain holes in the procedure.Perhaps, the ideal places to start are the records for the training provided. Having tangible proof about a worker’s understanding can certainly tell a lot about the situation. Sometimes, after an intensive investigation, it’s later revealed that the employee is responsible for the incident.3) Employers Are Mandated To Provide Health and Safety Training for EmployeesevalEmployers have the legal responsibility of ensuring that their staff is receiving adequate safety and health training enabling them to improve their confidence and skills. Various legislations and regulations require businesses to provide essential information, supervision, and training to workers ensuring the overall safety and health of everyone in the workplace.Additionally, owners must also give the extra care of duty to particular members of the staff that are either new, pregnant, o r younger workers Employees also need to participate and help with inspection and monitoring. Reporting a malfunctioning device or equipment is vital to keeping everyone safe. Here are the essential purpose of inspections:to listen to concerns of supervisors and workersgain further knowledge of jobs and tasksidentifying already existing and potential hazardsfinding the underlying cause of these hazardssuggest corrective actionrecord and monitor the steps that are taken to control these risks and eliminate these hazards completelyTypes of hazards that may exist in a workplace:Safety hazards Companies spend a lot of time and effort building a stable and profitable business. However, lawsuits can ruin all those years of hard work, that’s why a lot of organizations are seeking personal injury liability insurance. These kinds of policies protect owners from liabilities if ever employees are injured at work, or as a result of something a business fails to do.It’s worth noting that alth ough a lot of insurances protects lawsuits, it won’t necessarily cover everything. Business owners should still head extra precautions to be able to prevent these injuries from happening. For example, if a company has been sued in the past, chances are, the insurance company might not fully cover the damages that are similar to the previous lawsuit. More often than not, they may charge even more. Also, an insurance company needs to be notified immediately for any threatened lawsuits and injuries that may occur. The Bottom LineEmployees have a right to work in a safe work environment. Therefore, business owners should be aware that their business is their responsibility. Should potential dangers arise, they need to fix the problems as soon as they come up, to hopefully keep them out from the court. It’s also their responsibility to protect their business and personal assets should a lawsuit arise. For a business to flourish and be well on its way to a legal and hassle-free future, it’s worth the investment to consult an experienced, highly qualified professional attorney who specializes in personal injury law as soon as possible after an accident or injury has happened. For employees who experienced a workplace injury, it is always best to consult to a personal injury lawyer at the same time.

Boomer Job Search

Boomer Job Search Marc Miller of Career Pivot discussed issues faced by Baby Boomers in job search. Boomer Job Search Certainly age discrimination is one  problem older job seekers face, but there are other underlying issues. Employers are afraid the older candidate wont be able to adapt to the new work environment very quickly, will lack key technical skills or will coast until they retire. There is also the issue that older job seekers are more expensive. (Right or wrong- perception is reality.) Marc is a Baby Boomer himself and during our discussion he outlines things job seekers should know and do to better adapt and succeed in job search. What is the top issue Baby Boomers have with the new world of job search? How often are Boomers ready to change jobs? Why should Boomers incorporate Twitter into their job search? We spent time talking about consulting and the pros and cons of being self-employed. We also talked about the power of Twitter (and social media) which enables everyone to easily start conversations with more people. The trick is in nurturing those relationships to the next level to establish trust. Have a watch (its 30 minutes). Marc is also the author of a new ebook, Personal Branding for Baby Boomers, available on Amazon.
