Heres how to calm your pre job-interview jitters

Heres how to calm your pre job-interview jittersHeres how to calm your pre job-interview jittersWhen you truly want a job, the excitement over an upcoming interview can turn into a debilitating knot of anxiety in your stomach. This anxiety can have disastrous consequences on your interview performance. When you are too worried about how to act, you are not thinking clearly on how to best present yourself in front of others. In a new survey of 2,000 Americans, almost half said that getting too nervous was their biggest job interview mistake. You do not have to be one of them. It is possible to channel your anxiety into a more positive pre-interview ritual. Heres howReframe the story you are telling yourselfFor anxious people, one moment you can be fine, the next few minutes you can be feeling the symptoms of a panic attack - dizzy, nauseous, short of breath. To break out of a crippling pattern of anxiety, it helps to take control of the story you are telling yourself. You cannot contr ol the first anxious thought that pop into your head, but you can control how you react to it. Learning to observe your body without judgment is how you can use mindfulness to your advantage. Labeling your feelings positively can be parte of this. One recent study found that a positive attitude can help us weather emotional distress. To harness the power of your anxiety, psychologist Alicia Clark says that you can tell yourself that the feeling of your heart racing, which you thought was the discomfort of anxiety, is actually a crackle of excitement. When you are waiting to meet the hiring manager, tell yourself that your sweaty palms and nervous jitters are a positive sign of your excitement. These signals are telling you that you are passionate about this job. If you are passionate about a role, it means that the job could be a great fit for you.Write it downYou can also empty out your anxious thoughts about the interview in writing before it happens. This is a method for you to noti ce the fictions you are telling yourself, and to reframe them. Before the day of the interview, schedule a time to write down your worst-case scenario. You forget your interviewers name You mangle your answers Spend time outlining what you fear could happen. This does two important things when you schedule a time to worry, you can focus on the present moment. In one study, anxious participants who got a scheduled time to worry showed significant decreases in their overall anxiety and insomnia. When you know you have time to worry, you do not have to stay up the night before an interview in a panic. And second, the act of writing offloads our worries onto the page. One study found that participants who journaled their worries got better grades on a test than those who did not.Labeling your anxieties helps you take control of your circumstances. When you give your fears names, it helps you put them in perspective and it reduces the power ansicht thoughts hold over you.

Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for You

Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for YouWill Company-Wide Volunteering Work for YouAs a recruiter youre always looking for strategies that will help you improve your employees working experience without adding to your bottom line. And when it comes to recruiting and building loyalty, unusual benefits like paid volunteering are increasingly popular, especially among the coveted Gen Y demographic. So when Deloitte surveyed hundreds of corporate managers at companies with thousands of employees and found that 64 percent of them feel confident that corporate citizenship produces a tangible contribution to the company bottom line, it became fair to wonder what the impact of a giving program would be for your company.Whether youre interested in offering volunteer time-off programs or company-wide volunteer days, your questions remain the same Do these programs impact morale? Are they landseen as a perk by employees? Are there any tangible business benefits?Heres a look at three important things to understand about company giving trends and whether they can help you figure out if theyre right for your company.1. Company Giving Helps Attract and Identify Promising New Recruits There are two distinguishing characteristics that make the practice of company giving especially valuable to companies looking to recruit younger employees.PriceWaterhouseCoopers found that 88 percent of Millennials gravitate towards companies with established volunteering programs or corporate social responsibility programs.Offering a company giving program, whether that means volunteer time off or company-wide volunteering events, indicates to prospective hires that youre interested in their personal growth and who they are outside of their job description. With an established company giving program, youll not only attract more Millennials, but youll also have a better chance of keeping them.Company giving can also help you identify top performers in terms of attitude in the workplace and wil lingness to give of their time. Both individual volunteers and company-wide volunteering can help you better understand what drives a candidate or employee and identify performance markers for more strategic and long-lasting promotions.2. Company Giving Gives an Added Edge to Diverse EnvironmentsWith the ever-increasing emphasis on diversity in the workplace, youre working hard to create a team of individual members with different backgrounds, perspectives and experience. But while diversity helps you remain competitive in your industry, it can also lead to a more isolated or hesitant workspace simply because the only thing they have in common is an employer.Company-wide volunteering provides an opportunity for your employees to come together and achieve a common goal that isnt related to job functions or history. Youre providing a no-pressure zone for building common ground and learning to work as a team. When you sponsor company-wide volunteering days youre creating a new, shared history for your diverse employees. Employees come together outside of the usual business hierarchy and see that they can build something in common.3. Company Giving Wont Heal a Hurting EnvironmentJust one word of warning with all of the positive growth associated with company giving, dont think that company giving is a panacea for an increasingly toxic workplace. If you have serious problems to work through, such as high turnover or low morale, company giving programs will only worsen those feelings of resentment and discontinuity between what your employees really need and what you are willing to give them. Youre better off investing resources to improve communication and morale within the workplace than offering elective volunteer opportunities. If youre considering whether or not to include company giving as part of your companys paid benefits, theres no one right answer. If youre looking to help a good team get better or create common roots among a new team, then company giving w ill definitely reap productivity rewards. But it certainly wont solve any ongoing problems in the workplace. At the end of the day, the answer is much the same as applying any other new ideas for your work environment its up to each HR professional to decide whether or not its a good fit.Read Related ArticlesMake Candidates an Offer They Cant Refuse

How to Craft a Winning Resume ( Land an Offer from Google)

How to Craft a Winning Resume ( Land an Offer from Google)How to Craft a Winning Resume ( Land an Offer from Google) A resume is the fruchtwein important document in a job search process. Its the calling card, the hype man, the well-crafted record of your skills and experience that can make or break your chances of landing a coveted internship or job. At Glassdoor, weve spent a lot of time helping job seekers improve their resumes - writing, editing and tweaking such that its the perfect narrative to convince a recruiter of your irresistible talents. However, nothing can compare to actually seeing a winning resume, one that has garnered the attention- and job offers- from some of the best employers in the country. So we reached out to our millions of users to get their success stories of the job search and the precise resume that landed them a job that fits their life.Enter Neel Somani . The University of California, Berkeley student spent endless hours crafting the perfect resume and it scored him offers from Google, the National Security Agency and more.Whether youre a seasoned pro or a job-market newbie, here are Neels tried-and-tested (and Google verified) tips for crafting a winning resume .Glassdoor How would you describe your resume?Neel Somani I would describe my resume as detailed and accurate. When writing and editing my resume , I made an effort to make each of my experiences as clear and detailed as possible, while respecting the space limitations. I wanted the recruiter to have a good summary of what I did, including the technologies used and skills required.Glassdoor When you were crafting your resume, did you follow any guidelines or advice on how best structure it?Neel Somani As with most people, my resume has undergone countless revisions . Ive asked dozens of people for advice regarding my resume, and sometimes the advice that I received welches conflicting. Ive come to realize that the kind of advice that you receiv e from someone is contingent on their background. A software engineer, for example, will give starkly different advice from an investment banker. As far as structuring my resume welches concerned, I took my advice mainly from people with business backgrounds, who advised that I keep the layout very conventional unless I have a good reason to deviate. In the book Cracking the Coding Interview, Gayle McDowell gave similar advice, so I took a very standard layout and adapted it for my use case.In one of my undergraduate business administration courses, my graduate student instructor, who currently works at McKinsey, recommended that for college students, our education should go at the top, while for older professionals, education would go toward the bottom.Glassdoor What narrative or story did you want your resume to convey to recruiters and hiring managers?Neel Somani Thats a great question. My primary emphasis for this resume was to make it clear that Im someone with a deep technic al background, who is inherently entrepreneurial. To demonstrate my deep technical knowledge within computer science, I emphasize my research background and software development experience. My Selected Independent Projects serve to demonstrate my background in entrepreneurship, by highlighting two contracted applications that I developed for organizations. I similarly cite a business scholarship that I won, at the bottom of my resume.Glassdoor Why do you think this resume was so successful for you?Neel Somani For one, my research experience with the Berkeley Institute for Data Science was frequently mentioned. I think that this was a strong section within my Work Experience for a few reasons. The project was open-source, meaning that the code was freely available for anyone to view (or copy, modify, distribute, etc., for that matter). This meant that people interested in my programming experience could actually see the code that I had written. If youre within the field of computer science, I highly recommend getting involved in an open-source project and including a link on your resume. Aside from the fact that it was open-source, it helped that the platform was built using a modern language and framework (Python with the Tornado framework). I had various projects built in PHP listed on my resume for a while, and they never received any comment. I ultimately removed them from my resume altogether. The level of detail provided in the resume makes a difference. While I refrain from including every tiny contribution that I made in every position, the resume clearly conveys a few key takeaways from each experience. I was advised by an executive at HP to include quantitative metrics in particular. For example, rather than just saying what an application was built for, quantify it in some way. Concretely, rather than saying that I built an application for an organization, its stronger to say exactly how many people within the organization will be using the applicati on.Glassdoor How did you decide what to highlight and emphasize on your resume? Did you elect to delete some things in order to keep the resume to one page?Neel Somani This was the most difficult part. Like most people, I had to delete quite a bit to keep the resume to one page. Anything from before I entered college (e.g., high school experiences) were among the first items to be deleted. Ive completely removed the name of my high school, although I know that many people in college elect to keep it. After college, Id imagine itd be strange to have a high school listed on your resume.I have a separate document, which I dont share with anyone, where I write down all of my relevant professional experiences - small and big projects, internships, research positions, certifications, etc. When writing my resume, I picked the elements that I felt were most meaningful to me, and most accurately described my technical knowledge and professional experience. From there, I further narrowed do wn the list by asking various professionals who I knew. I just asked them which experiences they found to be most compelling, least compelling, etc., and I removed the less-popular items - despite how much I liked them.It goes without saying that its crucial to keep it to one page. People like to say that if Sheryl Sandberg can keep it to one page, so can you, which I think is kind of silly, since its Sheryl Sandberg she could potentially just put her name on a piece of paper, with no other information, and shed mucksmuschenstill get the interview. But regardless, the point still stands the resume needs to be one page max.Glassdoor Aside from Google where you are now an intern, where else did you receive internship/job offers thanks to your talents and this resume?Neel Somani I also applied for an internship at the NSA, for which I received the offer. I received an offer from Google soon after and ended up signing on early in the year, so I didnt go through the full application cy cle like many other students. Aside from internships, I was offered a position in all three of the research labs that I applied to during my sophomore year.Glassdoor What, if any, feedback have you received from your Google recruiter? What did they feel was so strong or compelling about your resume.Neel Somani The Google recruiter liked my resume for a few reasons how I utilized the space, the kinds of verbs that I used, the order in which I listed my programming languages, and the links to my open-source work. Glassdoor What advice would you give other job seekers on how to make their resumes better?Neel Somani My biggest piece of advice is to get feedback from as many people as you can, especially from people who have held positions that youre interested in. Aside from that, I would make a point to elaborate on each of your experiences. If a listed experience only has one bullet point, for example, Id make an effort to think deeply about what you did and flesh it out to at least two or three bullet points.Originally published in August 2017.
