About Job-Specific Skills

About Job-Specific Skills About Job-Specific Skills Job-specific skills are those abilities that allow a candidate for employment to excel in a particular job. Some skills are attained by attending school or training programs. Others can be acquired through experiential learning on the job. The skills that are needed for a specific job are also known as a  skill set. When hiring, employers will usually include the skill set required to be able to perform the job in the job posting. The applicants who most closely match the required skills will have the best chance of getting selected for a job interview. Read below for examples of job-specific skills, tips for identifying job-specific skills, and advice on how to match your skills and experience to those required for a job. Jobs Job-specific skills vary based on the position. For example, a CPA needs to have auditing skills, teachers need lesson planning skills, architects need CAD (computer-aided design) skills, construction workers need to know how to use a variety of tools, and hair stylists must know hair coloring techniques.   Job-Specific Skills vs. Transferable Skills Job-specific skills can be contrasted with  transferable skills  like communication, organization, presentation, teamwork, planning, and time management, which are required in a broad array of jobs. Transferable skills are those that you use for almost every job. Employability skills  are also the skills and traits necessary to succeed in every job. Hybrid skills are a combination of soft and hard skills that may be required for some positions. Certain transferable skills will be valued more highly for some occupations than others. For example, consultants need strong presentation skills and lawyers need solid research skills. However, these transferable skills shouldnt be confused with job-specific skills since they represent general areas of ability valued in a wide cross-section of jobs. In contrast, job-specific skills are skills required for a particular job. They might be completely unnecessary for other jobs but are critical for that job. For example, being able to operate a power saw is a job-specific skill for a carpenter, but not for many other jobs. Often, job-specific skills are hard skills, which are quantifiable or easily teachable skills. Transferable skills are more often soft skills. These are more subjective skills, often related to your personality and behavior, particularly how you interact with others. How to Identify Job-Specific Skills When applying for a job, you want to know the job-specific skills required for the position, so that you can emphasize your related skills and abilities. You can typically find job-specific skills within the job posting. Often there is a section of the job listing titled “Required Skills” or “Qualifications” that includes job-specific skills. Here is advice on how to decode a job posting. You can also look up similar job postings to get a sense of the required skills for the position. Finally, check out this list of  job-specific skills  for many different jobs. How to Match Your Skills to Job-Specific Skills When applying for a job, identify the job-specific skills for the position. Make a list of these skills. Then, look at each skill and think about how you can prove you have that asset. Think about work experience you have that has helped you develop each skill. Include these skills in your resume. You might even have sections on your resume that list all your experiences developing a specific skill. For example, if you are applying for a job as an editor, you might have a section in your resume titled “Editing Experience.” You can also emphasize these skills on your LinkedIn profile. Also, emphasize the job-specific skills you have in your cover letter. Use keywords from the job listing, and provide specific examples of times you demonstrated or developed each skill. Prepare to discuss these skills, and your experience in developing these skills, in every job interview. Before an interview, review your cover letter and resume, and make sure you can answer questions about times you have demonstrated each skill. For more tips on the best way to show that youre a strong match for a job, review these  tips for matching your qualifications for a job description. What to Do If You’re Missing a Skill If you are missing a critical job-related skill, this does not mean you can’t apply for the job. One option is to begin to develop that skill right away. For example, if you need experience coding, you might take a free coding class online. You can then list that course in your resume and cover letter, and mention it in your interview. You can also emphasize in your resume, cover letter, and interview that you are a fast learner, and provide examples of this. This might help convince the employer that you can quickly develop that missing skill set.

Ghostwriting and Hiring a Ghostwriter

Ghostwriting and Hiring a Ghostwriter Ghostwriting and Hiring a Ghostwriter A ghostwriter is paid to write for someone else under that persons name. It is most commonly associated with publishing a book, but today it is also widely used in public relations, corporate communications, social media, and many other industries and fields that are producing greater and greater amounts of written or spoken content. Type of Ghostwritten Projects Though best-known for their literary endeavors, ghostwriters lend their talents to a variety of projects, producing all sorts of material. Books:  Throughout the  history of publishing, politicians, business leaders, and other busy public figures have relied on ghostwriters to help them turn their ideas into polished works. More recently, thanks to the  self-publishing revolution, an even wider assortment of authors are using the talents of others to produce business how-to books, self-help books, memoirs and even  cookbooks  and novels.Speeches: In addition to books, ghostwriters are most often hired as speechwriters. Every President in U.S. history has had a speechwriter- in fact, often a team of them- at his disposal. Members of Congress and CEOs have also long used professional speechwriters to help them find the right words to win votes and build businesses. Now, with the growing popularity of TED-style conferences and the  media platform  they provide, more and more executives are joining the fold. Increasingly, businessmen and businesswomen want to be seen as thought leaders. So, theyre turning to wordsmiths to c raft the perfect messages for them.   Corporate Communications:  In this era of specialization, large and small companies alike are turning to experienced writers to craft their annual reports, quarterly statements, white papers, newsletters, website content, and corporate histories. Social and Digital Media Content: An active online and social media presence have become essential for the leaders of corporations, small businesses, and non-profits, as well as celebrities. The people behind these brands don’t have the time to constantly update their  Twitter,  Facebook, Instagram, and  website blog feeds, so they typically employ a digitally savvy ghostwriter to  curate accounts and provide content. Crediting Ghostwriters When it comes to books, most ghostwriters don’t receive any recognition beyond a thank you in the acknowledgments section. In many cases, they are asked to sign nondisclosure and/or confidentially agreements, especially for high-profile projects. Some ghosts, though, do get publicly credited on the cover as a co-writer (either with an “and” or “with” after the authors name). When it comes to speeches and other kinds of content, ghostwriters are truly invisible and are never acknowledged. Costs of Ghostwriters When you hire a ghostwriter, you’re paying for his skill, experience, and time. The cost varies greatly depending on the project, the caliber of the writer, the complexity of the subject matter, the budget, and more. Someone who has won a  Pulitzer Prize  or worked as a White House speechwriter is going to command a higher rate than a recent college graduate. Writing a book from scratch involves more of a writer’s time, and therefore costs more, than fleshing out a short  e-book or polishing a partially written manuscript. A client who’s looking to have a full-length book written can expect to pay anywhere from $20,000 to $200,000- and up.  A short e-book could cost anywhere from $2,000 to $12,000. Deadlines and Time-Frames for Ghostwriters Again, every project is different. The time-frame depends on how much source material has been compiled, how much additional research has to be done, and how many drafts are needed to capture the author’s voice. Some projects, like speech writing and corporate communications, are driven by firm deadlines and often have quick turnarounds. On the other hand, book projects, especially serious, idea-driven works, can take months and sometimes years to complete. Finding a Ghostwriter Corporations, organizations, and well-connected public figures often go through a  literary agent  or a PR firm to find an elite ghostwriter. But for most others, the internet is the best place to start. Some popular online resources for finding professional freelancers include Mediabistro, Elance, and Craigslist. Or, you can connect with a firm that specializes in ghostwriting such as Gotham Ghostwriters or 2M Communications. Choosing the Right Ghostwriter There are many things to consider when choosing a ghostwriter to assist you. Budget: How big a fee you can pay will likely determine the level of expertise you can expect. If youre new to the ghostwriting game, you may want to read more about  what you can expect to pay for editorial freelancers.Credentials:  You will also want to consider the work a writer has previously done. Ideally, you want someone who has worked on similar projects, which should make your project go more smoothly. Request résumés and writing samples from writers, so you can see their credentials and the work theyve produced. Also, be sure to ask for several references- and contact them. Interview:  Once you’ve got a short list based on skills and experience, spend some time talking with the writes to get a sense of who she is, how she works, and if youll be compatible. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time with this person, and you may be sharing intimate details about yourself.   The Ghostwriter-ClientRelationship Generally speaking, your ghostwriting relationship should be a highly collaborative one. The most effective ghostwriters are the ones who can help you produce the best version of your vision. To do so, they will often conduct extensive recorded interviews to get a sense of your voice, style, and personality. As with any relationship, open communication, clear boundaries, and manageable expectations are key to avoiding conflicts and keeping the work flowing.

Do, Delegate, or Delete It

Do, Delegate, or Delete It Do, Delegate, or Delete It Prioritizing is key to a successful job search.“Do it, delegate it or delete it,” is a Marine Corps maxim that is applied to any request that comes in â€" verbally or electronically. It’s the idea behind touching each task only once. How can this maxim help with your job search? Many of us begin our search methodically, and with purpose. Yet over time, as multiple leads come in, multiple resumes get written, and multiple phone calls are made, both our desk and our email inbox become filled with requests and exhortations. Neglecting these items paralyzes our thinking and keeps us from moving forward. Instituting this Marine Corps mindset enables you to follow up, and follow through, with greater efficiency.“That’s all very well,” you might be thinking, “but isn’t it a little simplistic? It’s pretty clear which actions fall into which category.”In fact, no. Because career changes are often stressful â€" the stakes are high, and they’re personal â€" it’s often hard to apply the same logic we use to strategize in other areas of our lives. Here are a few tips for each bucket:Do ItWhen a recruiter or hiring manager requests your resume, don’t delay. They are often managing tight deadlines and multiple job seekers and taking your time might lose you the opportunity. Be careful, however, not to do something so quickly that it isn’t professional. For example, when you receive a request to send someone a resume immediately, you might, in that moment, follow Nike’s advice and, “Just Do It,” because you’re so pleased to have gotten the request. But this is when I recommend taking a moment and just doing it right. In other words, take the time to research the company’s mission, its bestselling product and top competition. Tailor your resume and cover letter to guarantee they get noticed. Be sure to position yourself as someone who can contribute to furthering their goals, enhancing their capabilities, or plugging the hole in their operati ons via skill sets and ideas that are unique to you. Most importantly, never delegate or delete a networking opportunity. That is always in the ‘Do it’ pile. Don’t consider deleting the task of following up on a connection you got from the guy at the gym. You might not realize that following through would reveal his friend is VP of the firm you’ve been angling for the last six months.Delegate ItYou might think doing research is something you can delegate, but I’ve found this isn’t the best use of delegation. It’s far better to delegate tasks that many of us use as a form of creative procrastination masquerading as ‘necessary’ work: reformatting your resume, updating your website and even getting your interview wardrobe ready. All of these tasks give you a seemingly unimpeachable response to the question, “What are you doing to further your search?” In fact, they are avoidance behaviors, unless of course you are a designer or web developer. These tasks are general ly best handed off to those trained in these skill sets. Not only will you give yourself the time you need to focus on what you alone can do, you’ll likely end up with a far better looking document or site.Delete ItDelete tasks like multiple resume postings or searching job postings on unsubstantiated websites. Focused follow-through on personal recommendations and with accredited sites are far more likely to yield the results you seek.So start sorting! Prioritizing is key to a successful search. Get your items in order and start marching forward.

Study Doing this at work could sabotage your sleep

Study Doing this at work could sabotage your sleep Study Doing this at work could sabotage your sleep Certain behaviors don’t bode well for your quality of sleep- research has found that ‘night owls’ have a higher chance of dying than morning people, thinking you’re an insomniac could be harming your sleep and having your phone around when you hit the sheets certainly isn’t doing you any favors. But as if that weren’t enough to think about, new research in the Journal of Applied Psychology  has found that acting immorally at work might also throw a wrench in your quality of sleep, among many other findings. The researchers carried out three seperate studies and almost 600 people from China and the United States participated in total, using surveys. Each study had specific methodology, but the general analysis looked at the participants over 10 workdays and any “counterproductive work behaviors” and how they felt and slept after.   Participants had to share how they’ve behaved at work before, and people who “were prompted to”  remember how they acted immorally did worse in the sleep department the same night versus others who shared “routine work behaviors” (in the other study). Here were some of the most interesting findings. Why acting out at work isn’t in your best interestIt largely boils down to “counterproductive work behaviors,” which the study labels as “CWB.”  Drawing on specific research cited in the study, this term was defined as “employees’ work behaviors that can harm the organization and its members.”Lead researcher Zhenyu Yuan, a doctoral student of management and organizations at The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business, said,  â€œAfter people engage in bad workplace behaviors, they come to realize such bad deeds threaten their positive moral self-image, which creates stress…As a result, they may keep ruminating over their stress from work, and thus have trouble falling and staying asleep at night,” he said.Sounds like you could potentially spend a lot of time tossing and turning because of what you think of yourself and your actions at work. What this could mean for the workplace“Those who display CWB may encounter negative consequences for their own bad deeds, which may ultimately lead up to insomnia. Instead of taking this result as evidence that those who do wrong will ultimately pay for their own bad deeds, we encourage organizations to view this finding as another motive for management to take concrete measures to proactively reduce employee CWB in the first place,” the study continues.Basically, companies should do all they can to stop instances of immoral employee behavior. The researchers later wrote that making sure employees know how acting out at work could be “morally discrediting” could be a possible solution.

2 words every public speaker should avoid

2 words every public speaker should avoid 2 words every public speaker should avoid During the 2016 race for president, Republican rising star Marco Rubio came crashing down at a GOP debate in New Hampshire. That’s because Rubio used a single description of President Obama too many times, and his competition (namely New Jersey Governor Chris Christie) pounced all over it.When we fall back on the same words during a speech, the audience senses it right away. People start to think, “He’s really doing that a lot. Kind of annoying.”What’s “that”? A distracting tic or habit. For example: Too much hand gesturing On the flip side, standing motionless like a stone Going on too long with no idea the audience is bored Today, I will focus on a more widespread public speaking hiccup: the use of the words “uh” and “um.”Yes, we’re all guilty of the two verbal crutches, but some speakers lean on them way too much. After a few minutes, the audience starts to wait for the next “uh” or “um” and may not process what you actually have to say.If we’ve gone years sprinkling “uh” and “um” into daily conversations, then the habit is magnified when we’re nervous in front of a crowd.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.So what to do? How do we break away from “uh” and “um”? For me, the answer is …    â€¦ did you catch it?That’s right. Silence. If I don’t have the right word or am searching for the next sentence, I don’t say anything. I pause, stay quiet and plan my next move.I’m not quiet for an extended length of time like 10 seconds. That would be awkward. It’ s more like 1-2 seconds, those little bits throughout a speech where I could drop an “uhhhh” and fill the gap. Instead, silence. The approach has another, more subtle advantage too - it helps to draw the audience in. If I create brief moments of quiet, it makes people lean in and think, “What’s he going to say next?”On the flipside, if I talk in a never-ending stream of sentences linked by “uhs” and “ums,” there’s no time for the audience to absorb the thought. It’s like a moving train they can’t seem to board. Frustrating. With little pockets of silence, everyone (speaker too) has time to think about the most recent line and gear up for the next one.Next time you talk to a group (even from your seat at a staff meeting), try to pause rather than cling to “uh” and “um.”And if you’re running for office like Rubio, ditch the robotic one-liners.Sure, the words will keep you afloat, but your message may be lost at sea.More public speaking tips: How to tell if your speeches take too long How to leave a proper voicemail Why you need to hear the sound of your own voice (even though you don’t like to) This article first appeared on Dannyhrubin.com.

Best Answers for Interview Questions on Cold Calling

Best Answers for Interview Questions on Cold Calling Best Answers for Interview Questions on Cold Calling If you’re interviewing for a  cold calling  sales position, you’ll need to convince your potential employer that you can to persuade complete strangers to buy the company’s product or service. While your interview will include many different questions about your background, education, and sales experience, the questions about cold calling will be especially important. Here are a few examples of questions you might be asked and ways you can answer to prove your mettle. Be sure to customize your answers to play up your personal strengths. What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses? This may seem like a rather general question, but it’s an effective way to show off your skills. Bring up strengths that are important for telemarketing or in-person sales, such being a good listener, understanding customer needs, relating to customers, and being a persuasive speaker. When you point out a weakness, always follow up with how you’ve worked to overcome it, especially in a work setting. Don’t make excuses or blame previous bosses or employees for any situations that exposed your weaknesses - stay positive throughout the interview. Are You Comfortable Making Cold Calls? Dont just say yes - follow it up with an explanation of why you can do this with ease. For example: “Absolutely. I enjoy reaching out to people with new products and ideas.”“I am comfortable making  cold calls. I have found that some of my most interesting sales have been the result of a cold call, to someone who was rather unsure of their interest in my product at our first meeting.”“I dont mind making cold calls, but I prefer to start my sales cycle with a customer who has shown some interest in the product. Warm leads are proven to be more cost-effective in the long term, and they are a more efficient use of my time spent calling.” What Motivates You to Sell? With cold calling, keeping your motivation high is key. Convince the interviewer of your enthusiasm with these answers: “I really enjoy educating people on products that could help them or make their lives more enjoyable. I like to keep in mind that they would never know about these products if I didn’t make that call.”“I feel a lot of pride when I complete a sale and provide a great service to a new customer.”“I am very competitive and enjoy achieving and surpassing sales goals.”“I love the teamwork environment of working in a call center.” How Many Calls Per Hour Can You Make? You might hear this question if you come to the interview with prior telemarketing experience. Be prepared to share how long your average call handle time was and how many calls on average you accomplished per hour. Explain any variables, such as if you used predictive dialing, and how those variables increased or decreased your efficiency. You could also use this time to ask what type of telephone system and equipment the company has. How Do You Handle Negative Customer Reactions? It’s inevitable that you’ll encounter angry customers who resent telemarketing calls. Explain your philosophy of handling such calls, and if you can, provide a specific instance that you handled well. For example: “I know customers are not always in the mood to receive a call. I find that apologizing often calms customers down.”“I always try to set up a callback time, because I don’t want the customer to miss out on the valuable product or service I am offering them.” Is Cold Calling Dead? Some interviewers may throw in this trick question to measure your level of enthusiasm or knowledge of the industry. If the answer were yes, you wouldn’t even be interviewing for this position. So, don’t let a question like this catch you off guard - prep yourself with a positive spin on the question: “A lot of conditions in sales can change, but connecting with people never does.”“Cold calling is alive and well. When I pick up the phone and call potential buyers, I control what I say and how I say it. I can keep the call focused on the customer and the value the product can provide.” More Sales Job Interview Tips Before you head out to your interview, make sure you review sales job interview tips  so you can convincingly sell your most important product - yourself - to an employer who is well-versed in sales strategies.

Effective Employee Retention Strategies

Effective Employee Retention Strategies Effective Employee Retention Strategies It's every manager's nightmare: One of your best employees resigns out of the blue. Right away, you've got a number of challenges to tackle on top of your daily responsibilities. Not only do you have to find a replacement for such a talented team member - no small feat when skilled professionals are in high demand, as they are today - but you also have to consider the impact this departure will have on the rest of your staff. Whenever someone walks out the door, people notice. Some will even start wondering if they should start looking for a new job, too. That's why employee retention and employee job satisfaction should be high on every organization's list of priorities, and why creating effective retention strategies to decrease turnover should be one of management's most important jobs. Read on for our tips on building strategies that are right for your company. How to develop employee retention strategies Succeeding in your employee retention efforts requires you to think about things from the team's?point of view. All employees are different, of course, and each has unique desires and goals. But it's a safe bet to assume that all of them want to know they are being paid at or above market rates and have good benefits. They want to feel that they are appreciated by their employer and treated fairly. They want to be challenged and excited by the job they're asked to do. An effective employee retention program addresses all of these concerns. But it also goes beyond the basics. In fact, your efforts should start on a new hire's first day on the job. The training and support you provide from Day One sets the tone for the employee's ?tenure at the company and boosts job?satisfaction. GET OUR SALARY GUIDE Ways to improve employee retention Every area of the employer-employee relationship in your organization deserves your attention. Embrace these?key?strategies to improve your organization's employee retention and boost employee ?satisfaction: Onboarding and orientation - Every new hire should be set up for success from the very start, from the first day of work to the first week and beyond. The job ?orientation is just one component of onboarding, which can last for weeks or months, depending on your organization. Aim to develop an onboarding process where new staff members not only learn about the job but also the company culture and how they can contribute and thrive, with ongoing discussions, goals and opportunities to address questions and issues as they arrive. Mentorship programs - Pairing a new employee with a mentor is a great idea for onboarding. New?team members can learn the ropes from a veteran with a wealth of resources, and the new?hire offers a fresh viewpoint ?to experienced staff. Mentors shouldn't be work supervisors, but they can offer guidance and be a sounding board for newcomers, welcoming them into the company culture.? Employee compensation - It's absolutely essential in this competitive labor market for companies to offer attractive compensation packages. That includes salaries, of course, but also bonuses, paid time off, health benefits, retirement plans and all the other perks that can distinguish one workplace from another. Every employee should have a full understanding of all the benefits they receive from your organization.? Recognition and rewards systems - Every person wants to feel appreciated for what they do. Make it a habit to thank your direct reports when they go the extra mile, whether it's with a sincere email, a gift card or an extra day off. Show your employees you appreciate them, and share how their hard work helps the ?organization. Some companies set up rewards systems that incentivize great ideas and innovation, but you can institute recognition programs even on a small team with a small budget. Work-life balance - What message is your company culture sending?
