Heres how to calm your pre job-interview jitters

Heres how to calm your pre job-interview jittersHeres how to calm your pre job-interview jittersWhen you truly want a job, the excitement over an upcoming interview can turn into a debilitating knot of anxiety in your stomach. This anxiety can have disastrous consequences on your interview performance. When you are too worried about how to act, you are not thinking clearly on how to best present yourself in front of others. In a new survey of 2,000 Americans, almost half said that getting too nervous was their biggest job interview mistake. You do not have to be one of them. It is possible to channel your anxiety into a more positive pre-interview ritual. Heres howReframe the story you are telling yourselfFor anxious people, one moment you can be fine, the next few minutes you can be feeling the symptoms of a panic attack - dizzy, nauseous, short of breath. To break out of a crippling pattern of anxiety, it helps to take control of the story you are telling yourself. You cannot contr ol the first anxious thought that pop into your head, but you can control how you react to it. Learning to observe your body without judgment is how you can use mindfulness to your advantage. Labeling your feelings positively can be parte of this. One recent study found that a positive attitude can help us weather emotional distress. To harness the power of your anxiety, psychologist Alicia Clark says that you can tell yourself that the feeling of your heart racing, which you thought was the discomfort of anxiety, is actually a crackle of excitement. When you are waiting to meet the hiring manager, tell yourself that your sweaty palms and nervous jitters are a positive sign of your excitement. These signals are telling you that you are passionate about this job. If you are passionate about a role, it means that the job could be a great fit for you.Write it downYou can also empty out your anxious thoughts about the interview in writing before it happens. This is a method for you to noti ce the fictions you are telling yourself, and to reframe them. Before the day of the interview, schedule a time to write down your worst-case scenario. You forget your interviewers name You mangle your answers Spend time outlining what you fear could happen. This does two important things when you schedule a time to worry, you can focus on the present moment. In one study, anxious participants who got a scheduled time to worry showed significant decreases in their overall anxiety and insomnia. When you know you have time to worry, you do not have to stay up the night before an interview in a panic. And second, the act of writing offloads our worries onto the page. One study found that participants who journaled their worries got better grades on a test than those who did not.Labeling your anxieties helps you take control of your circumstances. When you give your fears names, it helps you put them in perspective and it reduces the power ansicht thoughts hold over you.

Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for You

Will Company-Wide Volunteering Work for YouWill Company-Wide Volunteering Work for YouAs a recruiter youre always looking for strategies that will help you improve your employees working experience without adding to your bottom line. And when it comes to recruiting and building loyalty, unusual benefits like paid volunteering are increasingly popular, especially among the coveted Gen Y demographic. So when Deloitte surveyed hundreds of corporate managers at companies with thousands of employees and found that 64 percent of them feel confident that corporate citizenship produces a tangible contribution to the company bottom line, it became fair to wonder what the impact of a giving program would be for your company.Whether youre interested in offering volunteer time-off programs or company-wide volunteer days, your questions remain the same Do these programs impact morale? Are they landseen as a perk by employees? Are there any tangible business benefits?Heres a look at three important things to understand about company giving trends and whether they can help you figure out if theyre right for your company.1. Company Giving Helps Attract and Identify Promising New Recruits There are two distinguishing characteristics that make the practice of company giving especially valuable to companies looking to recruit younger employees.PriceWaterhouseCoopers found that 88 percent of Millennials gravitate towards companies with established volunteering programs or corporate social responsibility programs.Offering a company giving program, whether that means volunteer time off or company-wide volunteering events, indicates to prospective hires that youre interested in their personal growth and who they are outside of their job description. With an established company giving program, youll not only attract more Millennials, but youll also have a better chance of keeping them.Company giving can also help you identify top performers in terms of attitude in the workplace and wil lingness to give of their time. Both individual volunteers and company-wide volunteering can help you better understand what drives a candidate or employee and identify performance markers for more strategic and long-lasting promotions.2. Company Giving Gives an Added Edge to Diverse EnvironmentsWith the ever-increasing emphasis on diversity in the workplace, youre working hard to create a team of individual members with different backgrounds, perspectives and experience. But while diversity helps you remain competitive in your industry, it can also lead to a more isolated or hesitant workspace simply because the only thing they have in common is an employer.Company-wide volunteering provides an opportunity for your employees to come together and achieve a common goal that isnt related to job functions or history. Youre providing a no-pressure zone for building common ground and learning to work as a team. When you sponsor company-wide volunteering days youre creating a new, shared history for your diverse employees. Employees come together outside of the usual business hierarchy and see that they can build something in common.3. Company Giving Wont Heal a Hurting EnvironmentJust one word of warning with all of the positive growth associated with company giving, dont think that company giving is a panacea for an increasingly toxic workplace. If you have serious problems to work through, such as high turnover or low morale, company giving programs will only worsen those feelings of resentment and discontinuity between what your employees really need and what you are willing to give them. Youre better off investing resources to improve communication and morale within the workplace than offering elective volunteer opportunities. If youre considering whether or not to include company giving as part of your companys paid benefits, theres no one right answer. If youre looking to help a good team get better or create common roots among a new team, then company giving w ill definitely reap productivity rewards. But it certainly wont solve any ongoing problems in the workplace. At the end of the day, the answer is much the same as applying any other new ideas for your work environment its up to each HR professional to decide whether or not its a good fit.Read Related ArticlesMake Candidates an Offer They Cant Refuse

How to Craft a Winning Resume ( Land an Offer from Google)

How to Craft a Winning Resume ( Land an Offer from Google)How to Craft a Winning Resume ( Land an Offer from Google) A resume is the fruchtwein important document in a job search process. Its the calling card, the hype man, the well-crafted record of your skills and experience that can make or break your chances of landing a coveted internship or job. At Glassdoor, weve spent a lot of time helping job seekers improve their resumes - writing, editing and tweaking such that its the perfect narrative to convince a recruiter of your irresistible talents. However, nothing can compare to actually seeing a winning resume, one that has garnered the attention- and job offers- from some of the best employers in the country. So we reached out to our millions of users to get their success stories of the job search and the precise resume that landed them a job that fits their life.Enter Neel Somani . The University of California, Berkeley student spent endless hours crafting the perfect resume and it scored him offers from Google, the National Security Agency and more.Whether youre a seasoned pro or a job-market newbie, here are Neels tried-and-tested (and Google verified) tips for crafting a winning resume .Glassdoor How would you describe your resume?Neel Somani I would describe my resume as detailed and accurate. When writing and editing my resume , I made an effort to make each of my experiences as clear and detailed as possible, while respecting the space limitations. I wanted the recruiter to have a good summary of what I did, including the technologies used and skills required.Glassdoor When you were crafting your resume, did you follow any guidelines or advice on how best structure it?Neel Somani As with most people, my resume has undergone countless revisions . Ive asked dozens of people for advice regarding my resume, and sometimes the advice that I received welches conflicting. Ive come to realize that the kind of advice that you receiv e from someone is contingent on their background. A software engineer, for example, will give starkly different advice from an investment banker. As far as structuring my resume welches concerned, I took my advice mainly from people with business backgrounds, who advised that I keep the layout very conventional unless I have a good reason to deviate. In the book Cracking the Coding Interview, Gayle McDowell gave similar advice, so I took a very standard layout and adapted it for my use case.In one of my undergraduate business administration courses, my graduate student instructor, who currently works at McKinsey, recommended that for college students, our education should go at the top, while for older professionals, education would go toward the bottom.Glassdoor What narrative or story did you want your resume to convey to recruiters and hiring managers?Neel Somani Thats a great question. My primary emphasis for this resume was to make it clear that Im someone with a deep technic al background, who is inherently entrepreneurial. To demonstrate my deep technical knowledge within computer science, I emphasize my research background and software development experience. My Selected Independent Projects serve to demonstrate my background in entrepreneurship, by highlighting two contracted applications that I developed for organizations. I similarly cite a business scholarship that I won, at the bottom of my resume.Glassdoor Why do you think this resume was so successful for you?Neel Somani For one, my research experience with the Berkeley Institute for Data Science was frequently mentioned. I think that this was a strong section within my Work Experience for a few reasons. The project was open-source, meaning that the code was freely available for anyone to view (or copy, modify, distribute, etc., for that matter). This meant that people interested in my programming experience could actually see the code that I had written. If youre within the field of computer science, I highly recommend getting involved in an open-source project and including a link on your resume. Aside from the fact that it was open-source, it helped that the platform was built using a modern language and framework (Python with the Tornado framework). I had various projects built in PHP listed on my resume for a while, and they never received any comment. I ultimately removed them from my resume altogether. The level of detail provided in the resume makes a difference. While I refrain from including every tiny contribution that I made in every position, the resume clearly conveys a few key takeaways from each experience. I was advised by an executive at HP to include quantitative metrics in particular. For example, rather than just saying what an application was built for, quantify it in some way. Concretely, rather than saying that I built an application for an organization, its stronger to say exactly how many people within the organization will be using the applicati on.Glassdoor How did you decide what to highlight and emphasize on your resume? Did you elect to delete some things in order to keep the resume to one page?Neel Somani This was the most difficult part. Like most people, I had to delete quite a bit to keep the resume to one page. Anything from before I entered college (e.g., high school experiences) were among the first items to be deleted. Ive completely removed the name of my high school, although I know that many people in college elect to keep it. After college, Id imagine itd be strange to have a high school listed on your resume.I have a separate document, which I dont share with anyone, where I write down all of my relevant professional experiences - small and big projects, internships, research positions, certifications, etc. When writing my resume, I picked the elements that I felt were most meaningful to me, and most accurately described my technical knowledge and professional experience. From there, I further narrowed do wn the list by asking various professionals who I knew. I just asked them which experiences they found to be most compelling, least compelling, etc., and I removed the less-popular items - despite how much I liked them.It goes without saying that its crucial to keep it to one page. People like to say that if Sheryl Sandberg can keep it to one page, so can you, which I think is kind of silly, since its Sheryl Sandberg she could potentially just put her name on a piece of paper, with no other information, and shed mucksmuschenstill get the interview. But regardless, the point still stands the resume needs to be one page max.Glassdoor Aside from Google where you are now an intern, where else did you receive internship/job offers thanks to your talents and this resume?Neel Somani I also applied for an internship at the NSA, for which I received the offer. I received an offer from Google soon after and ended up signing on early in the year, so I didnt go through the full application cy cle like many other students. Aside from internships, I was offered a position in all three of the research labs that I applied to during my sophomore year.Glassdoor What, if any, feedback have you received from your Google recruiter? What did they feel was so strong or compelling about your resume.Neel Somani The Google recruiter liked my resume for a few reasons how I utilized the space, the kinds of verbs that I used, the order in which I listed my programming languages, and the links to my open-source work. Glassdoor What advice would you give other job seekers on how to make their resumes better?Neel Somani My biggest piece of advice is to get feedback from as many people as you can, especially from people who have held positions that youre interested in. Aside from that, I would make a point to elaborate on each of your experiences. If a listed experience only has one bullet point, for example, Id make an effort to think deeply about what you did and flesh it out to at least two or three bullet points.Originally published in August 2017.

About Job-Specific Skills

About Job-Specific Skills About Job-Specific Skills Job-specific skills are those abilities that allow a candidate for employment to excel in a particular job. Some skills are attained by attending school or training programs. Others can be acquired through experiential learning on the job. The skills that are needed for a specific job are also known as a  skill set. When hiring, employers will usually include the skill set required to be able to perform the job in the job posting. The applicants who most closely match the required skills will have the best chance of getting selected for a job interview. Read below for examples of job-specific skills, tips for identifying job-specific skills, and advice on how to match your skills and experience to those required for a job. Jobs Job-specific skills vary based on the position. For example, a CPA needs to have auditing skills, teachers need lesson planning skills, architects need CAD (computer-aided design) skills, construction workers need to know how to use a variety of tools, and hair stylists must know hair coloring techniques.   Job-Specific Skills vs. Transferable Skills Job-specific skills can be contrasted with  transferable skills  like communication, organization, presentation, teamwork, planning, and time management, which are required in a broad array of jobs. Transferable skills are those that you use for almost every job. Employability skills  are also the skills and traits necessary to succeed in every job. Hybrid skills are a combination of soft and hard skills that may be required for some positions. Certain transferable skills will be valued more highly for some occupations than others. For example, consultants need strong presentation skills and lawyers need solid research skills. However, these transferable skills shouldnt be confused with job-specific skills since they represent general areas of ability valued in a wide cross-section of jobs. In contrast, job-specific skills are skills required for a particular job. They might be completely unnecessary for other jobs but are critical for that job. For example, being able to operate a power saw is a job-specific skill for a carpenter, but not for many other jobs. Often, job-specific skills are hard skills, which are quantifiable or easily teachable skills. Transferable skills are more often soft skills. These are more subjective skills, often related to your personality and behavior, particularly how you interact with others. How to Identify Job-Specific Skills When applying for a job, you want to know the job-specific skills required for the position, so that you can emphasize your related skills and abilities. You can typically find job-specific skills within the job posting. Often there is a section of the job listing titled “Required Skills” or “Qualifications” that includes job-specific skills. Here is advice on how to decode a job posting. You can also look up similar job postings to get a sense of the required skills for the position. Finally, check out this list of  job-specific skills  for many different jobs. How to Match Your Skills to Job-Specific Skills When applying for a job, identify the job-specific skills for the position. Make a list of these skills. Then, look at each skill and think about how you can prove you have that asset. Think about work experience you have that has helped you develop each skill. Include these skills in your resume. You might even have sections on your resume that list all your experiences developing a specific skill. For example, if you are applying for a job as an editor, you might have a section in your resume titled “Editing Experience.” You can also emphasize these skills on your LinkedIn profile. Also, emphasize the job-specific skills you have in your cover letter. Use keywords from the job listing, and provide specific examples of times you demonstrated or developed each skill. Prepare to discuss these skills, and your experience in developing these skills, in every job interview. Before an interview, review your cover letter and resume, and make sure you can answer questions about times you have demonstrated each skill. For more tips on the best way to show that youre a strong match for a job, review these  tips for matching your qualifications for a job description. What to Do If You’re Missing a Skill If you are missing a critical job-related skill, this does not mean you can’t apply for the job. One option is to begin to develop that skill right away. For example, if you need experience coding, you might take a free coding class online. You can then list that course in your resume and cover letter, and mention it in your interview. You can also emphasize in your resume, cover letter, and interview that you are a fast learner, and provide examples of this. This might help convince the employer that you can quickly develop that missing skill set.

Ghostwriting and Hiring a Ghostwriter

Ghostwriting and Hiring a Ghostwriter Ghostwriting and Hiring a Ghostwriter A ghostwriter is paid to write for someone else under that persons name. It is most commonly associated with publishing a book, but today it is also widely used in public relations, corporate communications, social media, and many other industries and fields that are producing greater and greater amounts of written or spoken content. Type of Ghostwritten Projects Though best-known for their literary endeavors, ghostwriters lend their talents to a variety of projects, producing all sorts of material. Books:  Throughout the  history of publishing, politicians, business leaders, and other busy public figures have relied on ghostwriters to help them turn their ideas into polished works. More recently, thanks to the  self-publishing revolution, an even wider assortment of authors are using the talents of others to produce business how-to books, self-help books, memoirs and even  cookbooks  and novels.Speeches: In addition to books, ghostwriters are most often hired as speechwriters. Every President in U.S. history has had a speechwriter- in fact, often a team of them- at his disposal. Members of Congress and CEOs have also long used professional speechwriters to help them find the right words to win votes and build businesses. Now, with the growing popularity of TED-style conferences and the  media platform  they provide, more and more executives are joining the fold. Increasingly, businessmen and businesswomen want to be seen as thought leaders. So, theyre turning to wordsmiths to c raft the perfect messages for them.   Corporate Communications:  In this era of specialization, large and small companies alike are turning to experienced writers to craft their annual reports, quarterly statements, white papers, newsletters, website content, and corporate histories. Social and Digital Media Content: An active online and social media presence have become essential for the leaders of corporations, small businesses, and non-profits, as well as celebrities. The people behind these brands don’t have the time to constantly update their  Twitter,  Facebook, Instagram, and  website blog feeds, so they typically employ a digitally savvy ghostwriter to  curate accounts and provide content. Crediting Ghostwriters When it comes to books, most ghostwriters don’t receive any recognition beyond a thank you in the acknowledgments section. In many cases, they are asked to sign nondisclosure and/or confidentially agreements, especially for high-profile projects. Some ghosts, though, do get publicly credited on the cover as a co-writer (either with an “and” or “with” after the authors name). When it comes to speeches and other kinds of content, ghostwriters are truly invisible and are never acknowledged. Costs of Ghostwriters When you hire a ghostwriter, you’re paying for his skill, experience, and time. The cost varies greatly depending on the project, the caliber of the writer, the complexity of the subject matter, the budget, and more. Someone who has won a  Pulitzer Prize  or worked as a White House speechwriter is going to command a higher rate than a recent college graduate. Writing a book from scratch involves more of a writer’s time, and therefore costs more, than fleshing out a short  e-book or polishing a partially written manuscript. A client who’s looking to have a full-length book written can expect to pay anywhere from $20,000 to $200,000- and up.  A short e-book could cost anywhere from $2,000 to $12,000. Deadlines and Time-Frames for Ghostwriters Again, every project is different. The time-frame depends on how much source material has been compiled, how much additional research has to be done, and how many drafts are needed to capture the author’s voice. Some projects, like speech writing and corporate communications, are driven by firm deadlines and often have quick turnarounds. On the other hand, book projects, especially serious, idea-driven works, can take months and sometimes years to complete. Finding a Ghostwriter Corporations, organizations, and well-connected public figures often go through a  literary agent  or a PR firm to find an elite ghostwriter. But for most others, the internet is the best place to start. Some popular online resources for finding professional freelancers include Mediabistro, Elance, and Craigslist. Or, you can connect with a firm that specializes in ghostwriting such as Gotham Ghostwriters or 2M Communications. Choosing the Right Ghostwriter There are many things to consider when choosing a ghostwriter to assist you. Budget: How big a fee you can pay will likely determine the level of expertise you can expect. If youre new to the ghostwriting game, you may want to read more about  what you can expect to pay for editorial freelancers.Credentials:  You will also want to consider the work a writer has previously done. Ideally, you want someone who has worked on similar projects, which should make your project go more smoothly. Request résumés and writing samples from writers, so you can see their credentials and the work theyve produced. Also, be sure to ask for several references- and contact them. Interview:  Once you’ve got a short list based on skills and experience, spend some time talking with the writes to get a sense of who she is, how she works, and if youll be compatible. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time with this person, and you may be sharing intimate details about yourself.   The Ghostwriter-ClientRelationship Generally speaking, your ghostwriting relationship should be a highly collaborative one. The most effective ghostwriters are the ones who can help you produce the best version of your vision. To do so, they will often conduct extensive recorded interviews to get a sense of your voice, style, and personality. As with any relationship, open communication, clear boundaries, and manageable expectations are key to avoiding conflicts and keeping the work flowing.

Do, Delegate, or Delete It

Do, Delegate, or Delete It Do, Delegate, or Delete It Prioritizing is key to a successful job search.“Do it, delegate it or delete it,” is a Marine Corps maxim that is applied to any request that comes in â€" verbally or electronically. It’s the idea behind touching each task only once. How can this maxim help with your job search? Many of us begin our search methodically, and with purpose. Yet over time, as multiple leads come in, multiple resumes get written, and multiple phone calls are made, both our desk and our email inbox become filled with requests and exhortations. Neglecting these items paralyzes our thinking and keeps us from moving forward. Instituting this Marine Corps mindset enables you to follow up, and follow through, with greater efficiency.“That’s all very well,” you might be thinking, “but isn’t it a little simplistic? It’s pretty clear which actions fall into which category.”In fact, no. Because career changes are often stressful â€" the stakes are high, and they’re personal â€" it’s often hard to apply the same logic we use to strategize in other areas of our lives. Here are a few tips for each bucket:Do ItWhen a recruiter or hiring manager requests your resume, don’t delay. They are often managing tight deadlines and multiple job seekers and taking your time might lose you the opportunity. Be careful, however, not to do something so quickly that it isn’t professional. For example, when you receive a request to send someone a resume immediately, you might, in that moment, follow Nike’s advice and, “Just Do It,” because you’re so pleased to have gotten the request. But this is when I recommend taking a moment and just doing it right. In other words, take the time to research the company’s mission, its bestselling product and top competition. Tailor your resume and cover letter to guarantee they get noticed. Be sure to position yourself as someone who can contribute to furthering their goals, enhancing their capabilities, or plugging the hole in their operati ons via skill sets and ideas that are unique to you. Most importantly, never delegate or delete a networking opportunity. That is always in the ‘Do it’ pile. Don’t consider deleting the task of following up on a connection you got from the guy at the gym. You might not realize that following through would reveal his friend is VP of the firm you’ve been angling for the last six months.Delegate ItYou might think doing research is something you can delegate, but I’ve found this isn’t the best use of delegation. It’s far better to delegate tasks that many of us use as a form of creative procrastination masquerading as ‘necessary’ work: reformatting your resume, updating your website and even getting your interview wardrobe ready. All of these tasks give you a seemingly unimpeachable response to the question, “What are you doing to further your search?” In fact, they are avoidance behaviors, unless of course you are a designer or web developer. These tasks are general ly best handed off to those trained in these skill sets. Not only will you give yourself the time you need to focus on what you alone can do, you’ll likely end up with a far better looking document or site.Delete ItDelete tasks like multiple resume postings or searching job postings on unsubstantiated websites. Focused follow-through on personal recommendations and with accredited sites are far more likely to yield the results you seek.So start sorting! Prioritizing is key to a successful search. Get your items in order and start marching forward.

Study Doing this at work could sabotage your sleep

Study Doing this at work could sabotage your sleep Study Doing this at work could sabotage your sleep Certain behaviors don’t bode well for your quality of sleep- research has found that ‘night owls’ have a higher chance of dying than morning people, thinking you’re an insomniac could be harming your sleep and having your phone around when you hit the sheets certainly isn’t doing you any favors. But as if that weren’t enough to think about, new research in the Journal of Applied Psychology  has found that acting immorally at work might also throw a wrench in your quality of sleep, among many other findings. The researchers carried out three seperate studies and almost 600 people from China and the United States participated in total, using surveys. Each study had specific methodology, but the general analysis looked at the participants over 10 workdays and any “counterproductive work behaviors” and how they felt and slept after.   Participants had to share how they’ve behaved at work before, and people who “were prompted to”  remember how they acted immorally did worse in the sleep department the same night versus others who shared “routine work behaviors” (in the other study). Here were some of the most interesting findings. Why acting out at work isn’t in your best interestIt largely boils down to “counterproductive work behaviors,” which the study labels as “CWB.”  Drawing on specific research cited in the study, this term was defined as “employees’ work behaviors that can harm the organization and its members.”Lead researcher Zhenyu Yuan, a doctoral student of management and organizations at The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business, said,  Ã¢€œAfter people engage in bad workplace behaviors, they come to realize such bad deeds threaten their positive moral self-image, which creates stress…As a result, they may keep ruminating over their stress from work, and thus have trouble falling and staying asleep at night,” he said.Sounds like you could potentially spend a lot of time tossing and turning because of what you think of yourself and your actions at work. What this could mean for the workplace“Those who display CWB may encounter negative consequences for their own bad deeds, which may ultimately lead up to insomnia. Instead of taking this result as evidence that those who do wrong will ultimately pay for their own bad deeds, we encourage organizations to view this finding as another motive for management to take concrete measures to proactively reduce employee CWB in the first place,” the study continues.Basically, companies should do all they can to stop instances of immoral employee behavior. The researchers later wrote that making sure employees know how acting out at work could be “morally discrediting” could be a possible solution.

2 words every public speaker should avoid

2 words every public speaker should avoid 2 words every public speaker should avoid During the 2016 race for president, Republican rising star Marco Rubio came crashing down at a GOP debate in New Hampshire. That’s because Rubio used a single description of President Obama too many times, and his competition (namely New Jersey Governor Chris Christie) pounced all over it.When we fall back on the same words during a speech, the audience senses it right away. People start to think, “He’s really doing that a lot. Kind of annoying.”What’s “that”? A distracting tic or habit. For example: Too much hand gesturing On the flip side, standing motionless like a stone Going on too long with no idea the audience is bored Today, I will focus on a more widespread public speaking hiccup: the use of the words “uh” and “um.”Yes, we’re all guilty of the two verbal crutches, but some speakers lean on them way too much. After a few minutes, the audience starts to wait for the next “uh” or “um” and may not process what you actually have to say.If we’ve gone years sprinkling “uh” and “um” into daily conversations, then the habit is magnified when we’re nervous in front of a crowd.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.So what to do? How do we break away from “uh” and “um”? For me, the answer is …    Ã¢€¦ did you catch it?That’s right. Silence. If I don’t have the right word or am searching for the next sentence, I don’t say anything. I pause, stay quiet and plan my next move.I’m not quiet for an extended length of time like 10 seconds. That would be awkward. It’ s more like 1-2 seconds, those little bits throughout a speech where I could drop an “uhhhh” and fill the gap. Instead, silence. The approach has another, more subtle advantage too - it helps to draw the audience in. If I create brief moments of quiet, it makes people lean in and think, “What’s he going to say next?”On the flipside, if I talk in a never-ending stream of sentences linked by “uhs” and “ums,” there’s no time for the audience to absorb the thought. It’s like a moving train they can’t seem to board. Frustrating. With little pockets of silence, everyone (speaker too) has time to think about the most recent line and gear up for the next one.Next time you talk to a group (even from your seat at a staff meeting), try to pause rather than cling to “uh” and “um.”And if you’re running for office like Rubio, ditch the robotic one-liners.Sure, the words will keep you afloat, but your message may be lost at sea.More public speaking tips: How to tell if your speeches take too long How to leave a proper voicemail Why you need to hear the sound of your own voice (even though you don’t like to) This article first appeared on Dannyhrubin.com.

Best Answers for Interview Questions on Cold Calling

Best Answers for Interview Questions on Cold Calling Best Answers for Interview Questions on Cold Calling If you’re interviewing for a  cold calling  sales position, you’ll need to convince your potential employer that you can to persuade complete strangers to buy the company’s product or service. While your interview will include many different questions about your background, education, and sales experience, the questions about cold calling will be especially important. Here are a few examples of questions you might be asked and ways you can answer to prove your mettle. Be sure to customize your answers to play up your personal strengths. What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses? This may seem like a rather general question, but it’s an effective way to show off your skills. Bring up strengths that are important for telemarketing or in-person sales, such being a good listener, understanding customer needs, relating to customers, and being a persuasive speaker. When you point out a weakness, always follow up with how you’ve worked to overcome it, especially in a work setting. Don’t make excuses or blame previous bosses or employees for any situations that exposed your weaknesses - stay positive throughout the interview. Are You Comfortable Making Cold Calls? Dont just say yes - follow it up with an explanation of why you can do this with ease. For example: “Absolutely. I enjoy reaching out to people with new products and ideas.Ӊ€œI am comfortable making  cold calls. I have found that some of my most interesting sales have been the result of a cold call, to someone who was rather unsure of their interest in my product at our first meeting.Ӊ€œI dont mind making cold calls, but I prefer to start my sales cycle with a customer who has shown some interest in the product. Warm leads are proven to be more cost-effective in the long term, and they are a more efficient use of my time spent calling.” What Motivates You to Sell? With cold calling, keeping your motivation high is key. Convince the interviewer of your enthusiasm with these answers: “I really enjoy educating people on products that could help them or make their lives more enjoyable. I like to keep in mind that they would never know about these products if I didn’t make that call.Ӊ€œI feel a lot of pride when I complete a sale and provide a great service to a new customer.Ӊ€œI am very competitive and enjoy achieving and surpassing sales goals.Ӊ€œI love the teamwork environment of working in a call center.” How Many Calls Per Hour Can You Make? You might hear this question if you come to the interview with prior telemarketing experience. Be prepared to share how long your average call handle time was and how many calls on average you accomplished per hour. Explain any variables, such as if you used predictive dialing, and how those variables increased or decreased your efficiency. You could also use this time to ask what type of telephone system and equipment the company has. How Do You Handle Negative Customer Reactions? It’s inevitable that you’ll encounter angry customers who resent telemarketing calls. Explain your philosophy of handling such calls, and if you can, provide a specific instance that you handled well. For example: “I know customers are not always in the mood to receive a call. I find that apologizing often calms customers down.Ӊ€œI always try to set up a callback time, because I don’t want the customer to miss out on the valuable product or service I am offering them.” Is Cold Calling Dead? Some interviewers may throw in this trick question to measure your level of enthusiasm or knowledge of the industry. If the answer were yes, you wouldn’t even be interviewing for this position. So, don’t let a question like this catch you off guard - prep yourself with a positive spin on the question: “A lot of conditions in sales can change, but connecting with people never does.Ӊ€œCold calling is alive and well. When I pick up the phone and call potential buyers, I control what I say and how I say it. I can keep the call focused on the customer and the value the product can provide.” More Sales Job Interview Tips Before you head out to your interview, make sure you review sales job interview tips  so you can convincingly sell your most important product - yourself - to an employer who is well-versed in sales strategies.

Effective Employee Retention Strategies

Effective Employee Retention Strategies Effective Employee Retention Strategies It's every manager's nightmare: One of your best employees resigns out of the blue. Right away, you've got a number of challenges to tackle on top of your daily responsibilities. Not only do you have to find a replacement for such a talented team member - no small feat when skilled professionals are in high demand, as they are today - but you also have to consider the impact this departure will have on the rest of your staff. Whenever someone walks out the door, people notice. Some will even start wondering if they should start looking for a new job, too. That's why employee retention and employee job satisfaction should be high on every organization's list of priorities, and why creating effective retention strategies to decrease turnover should be one of management's most important jobs. Read on for our tips on building strategies that are right for your company. How to develop employee retention strategies Succeeding in your employee retention efforts requires you to think about things from the team's?point of view. All employees are different, of course, and each has unique desires and goals. But it's a safe bet to assume that all of them want to know they are being paid at or above market rates and have good benefits. They want to feel that they are appreciated by their employer and treated fairly. They want to be challenged and excited by the job they're asked to do. An effective employee retention program addresses all of these concerns. But it also goes beyond the basics. In fact, your efforts should start on a new hire's first day on the job. The training and support you provide from Day One sets the tone for the employee's ?tenure at the company and boosts job?satisfaction. GET OUR SALARY GUIDE Ways to improve employee retention Every area of the employer-employee relationship in your organization deserves your attention. Embrace these?key?strategies to improve your organization's employee retention and boost employee ?satisfaction: Onboarding and orientation - Every new hire should be set up for success from the very start, from the first day of work to the first week and beyond. The job ?orientation is just one component of onboarding, which can last for weeks or months, depending on your organization. Aim to develop an onboarding process where new staff members not only learn about the job but also the company culture and how they can contribute and thrive, with ongoing discussions, goals and opportunities to address questions and issues as they arrive. Mentorship programs - Pairing a new employee with a mentor is a great idea for onboarding. New?team members can learn the ropes from a veteran with a wealth of resources, and the new?hire offers a fresh viewpoint ?to experienced staff. Mentors shouldn't be work supervisors, but they can offer guidance and be a sounding board for newcomers, welcoming them into the company culture.? Employee compensation - It's absolutely essential in this competitive labor market for companies to offer attractive compensation packages. That includes salaries, of course, but also bonuses, paid time off, health benefits, retirement plans and all the other perks that can distinguish one workplace from another. Every employee should have a full understanding of all the benefits they receive from your organization.? Recognition and rewards systems - Every person wants to feel appreciated for what they do. Make it a habit to thank your direct reports when they go the extra mile, whether it's with a sincere email, a gift card or an extra day off. Show your employees you appreciate them, and share how their hard work helps the ?organization. Some companies set up rewards systems that incentivize great ideas and innovation, but you can institute recognition programs even on a small team with a small budget. Work-life balance - What message is your company culture sending? If?staff are expected to regularly work long hours and be at your beck and call, you'll likely run into issues with employee retention. Burnout is real. A healthy work-life balance is essential, and people need to know that management understands its importance. Encourage staff to take vacation time, and if late nights are necessary to wrap up a project, see if you can offer late arrivals or an extra day off to compensate and increase job satisfaction. Many companies offer telecommuting or flexible schedules to improve work-life balance for their employees. Training and development - In any position and industry, professionals want the possibility for advancement. Smart managers invest in their workers' professional development and seek opportunities for them to grow. Ask each of your direct reports about their short- and long-term goals to determine how you can help achieve them. Some companies pay for employees to attend conferences or industry events each year, or provide tuition reimbursement or continuing education training.? Communication and feedback - Keeping open lines of communication is essential for employee retention. Your direct reports should feel that they can come to you with ideas, questions and concerns, and likewise, they expect you to be honest and open with them about improvements they need to make in their own performance. Make sure you connect with each staff member on a regular basis - don't let issues build up for the annual review.? Dealing with change - Every workplace has to deal with unpleasant changes occasionally, and the?staff looks to leadership for reassurance. If your organization is going through a merger, layoffs or other big changes, keep your staff informed as much as you can to avoid feeding the rumor mill. Make big announcements face to face, and make sure you allow time for their questions. Fostering teamwork - When people work together, they can achieve more than they would have individually. Foster a culture?of collaboration that accommodates individuals' working styles and lets their talents shine. Do this by clarifying team objectives, business goals and roles, and encouraging ?everyone to contribute ideas and solutions. Team celebration - Celebrate major milestones for individuals and for the team. Whether the team just ?finished that huge quarterly project under budget or an employee brought home a new baby, seize the chance to celebrate together with a shared meal or group excursion.? A final tip: Remember to assess your employee retention strategies at least once a year. You̢۪ll want to stay current on market salary rates and benefits, and best practices in developing workplace culture and manager-employee relations. Doing so will help you keep staff morale high and turnover low while guaranteeing your organization̢۪s success. Tags

What Is So Fascinating About Two Page Resume Examples?

What Is So Fascinating About Two Page Resume Examples? Later, you've got significant understanding from the exact first couple words. There's a fast way to understand how long to produce your resume. It's actually pretty simple to earn a good resume heading. It's also wise to leave something to speak about in the interview. Whatever type of document that you need, you are certain to get the very best. There's not anything wrong with a 2 page resume in many instances. In any event, it slows the approach. The Appeal of Two Page Resume Examples Try, if you're able to, to create the break in information between two individual jobs. You need to remember that your resume must include only extremely vital information regarding yourself and not anything that's irrelevant or not required for that specific job profile. Not to mention how you need resumes to make an application for the great majority of jobs anyway. Two-page resumes simply took quite a little bit of time to scan and thus, it's simple to understand why the focus on one-page resumes began. If you can't match the work description, then you might be studying the incorrect roles or you don't understand how to leverage your transferable skills. Thus it's quite obvious that while hiring someone, lots of resumes must be considered by the recruiters, which makes it quite a hectic endeavor in their opinion. You need to always tailor your resume to the job which you're searching for. You might be searching for your next job after holding a couple of roles. The Number One Question You Must Ask for Two Page Resume Examples There are just two relevant rules to remember once it comes to writing a resume and the duration of your document isn't among them.
